The winter garden has definitely got me in the festive spirit. And then, somewhere along the way of this career, i came home in a way. Anya’s fairy tales, rich in russian folklore and history, form the emotional core of winter garden, as readers will find themselves drawn into her stories and, like the feuding sisters, come to understand the complex and profound background of a character who is largely unknowable (and in many ways unlikable) at the novel’s opening.
It tells the story of anya aka vera and her escape from leningrad. A russian refugee’s terrible secret overshadows her family life. And i do not say that lightly.
It was one of the greatest discussions we have had about a single book, opening up all sorts of conversation topics and feelings for and against the book. The audio version inspired me to change my stars from four to five. I cried so hard i couldn't even see the pages.

But yowza, was it an emotional roller coaster of a read! The story has so much depth to it and the author successfully transports the reader to both leningrad and alaska in a way i never expected. As young children, meredith and nina had decided that their mother did not love them.
